The Importance of Taking Your Baby to a Pediatrician

When a new baby is born, most mothers already have an idea of who they will choose to be their baby's pediatrician. However, some new parents may not be aware of how beneficial it can be to their baby to get them regular checkups with a pediatrician instead of a family physician. While a family physician may be able to provide adequate care, a pediatrician specializes in the health of babies, toddlers, and children and has a great deal of knowledge in how to care for them properly. These are some reasons why it is good to take your baby to a pediatric physician for regular checkups.

Vaccinations

A pediatrician is well experienced in giving young children the necessary vaccinations that prevent them from contracting certain dangerous childhood diseases. During the first few years of a child's life, there are several vaccinations that should be given to ensure they are in the best of health. While a family physician is perfectly capable of giving these vaccinations, a pediatrician can explain in depth to new parents what can happen if the vaccinations are not given on time and what side effects are and are not normal after taking the shots.

Baby's Development

Pediatricians also specialize in how a baby should develop properly. At each appointment, the child will be weighed and measured to determine that they are developing at a normal rate and continues to be healthy. As the child grows they will have different needs physically, mentally, and emotionally. The pediatrician can advise the parents what foods to try with the child, how to get them to sleep through the night, and even what fun activities to do with them to encourage their cognitive development.

Early Diagnosis of Childhood Conditions

If there are changes in the baby's eating or sleeping habits or any out-of-the-ordinary health issues arise, the pediatrician will know what steps to take to resolve these issues. Pediatricians know what to look for should a child develop certain medical conditions or behavioral issues. For instance, if a child has begun to have problems with separation anxiety from their parents or allergies to certain foods, the pediatrician will know what needs to be done about these problems.

It is not uncommon for a baby to see the same pediatrician throughout their childhood. This is beneficial to both the child and the parents because they all have a sense of trust with the pediatrician in knowing the child will always receive the very best of care.
